The water of the Navajo Nation has been compromised from over 40 years of uranium mining. The motivation of Stetson's research centers around the water quality issues within this community. In 2013, he traveled there with a group students, lead by Dr. Navid Saleh, to learn more about the local environmental issues. On this trip they sampled several local water sources and found levels of arsenic and radionuclides well above the MCL. On a second trip in 2015, Stetson and his advisor traveled back to the Navajo Nation to meet with professors from Dine College and San Juan College. They also met with third generation Navajo potter Dianna Tso to learn ancient pottery techniques. Stetson, advised by Dr. Saleh and Dr. Lawler, is using these techniques in his research on ceramic water filters at UT Austin.
